Care for Creation is Our Vocation
 
Pope Leo states, "“Care for creation is truly a vocation for every human being (our emphasis added). We are creatures among creatures, entrusted with the responsibility to care for all that the Creator has made,” Cardinal McElroy emphasized in January 2025, “It is a top issue in our world — how are we going to preserve the creation God has given us.”
 
You may be asking yourself, "But what can I do? I am just one person!" We've all been through it... the enormity of the task and the feeling of being incapacitated in the midst of the problem. Fortunately, you are not just one person, you are part of the body of the church. You have the opportunity to contribute at home, at work, with Saint Peter's, with the Archdiocese of Washington and with the global Catholic church! The following are ideas for each type of contribution:
 
At home: Try to incorporate more plants into your diet, thereby eating less meat. You don't have to go 100% meatless to help the environment (and your body!). Meatless Mondays is a popular way to do this. Find great recipes here!
At work: Encourage less use of plastic. For example, bring your lunch using a reusable container. Have a contest for people who can use the least amount of one-use plastic items.
With Saint Peter's: Come to the next Plant-based Potluck. Care for God's Creation -- Get Involved!

Whether you are young or old, with kids or without, you are probably asking yourself “What can I do to heal our shared home, the Earth?” Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si” provides hope that working together we can do just that.

Whether you engage in activities on your own or with fellow parishioners, there are many things you can do. The following are activities you can do with the parish’s Care for God’s Creation committee, which was formed to carry out Pope Francis’ direction in “Laudato Si.” If you are interested in one or more activities, email This email address is being protected from spambots.   1. Trash Pick-up: This monthly meet-up next to the Fields@RFK ensures that the area around Kingman Island is kept clean and keeps trash from entering the natural habitat that is home to many species of fish, birds, and mammals. This is great for even the littles! ?
  2. Earth Month, Laudato Si Week, & Season of Creation: The month of April is dedicated to healing our common home and the Care for God’s Creation Committee is making plans to get the parish involved. There is still time for your ideas and your help!
  3. Advocacy & Environmental Justice: Is there something you think needs to change if we are to do better for our environment? The advocacy group supports changes to services, policies, and communications that can improve our community.
  4. Coordinating with the Archdiocese of Washington: Whatever we want to do as a parish can be amplified by working across the archdiocese. This group works to lend our voice and action to others across DC.
  5. Laudato Si & Laudato Deum Book Club: Are you interested in discussing Pope Francis’ directives related to our shared home? You are just in time, as we are forming this book club now!
  6. The Collective Garden at Holy Name. We need gardeners, general volunteers, and those who speak Spanish.

Care for God's Creation: Plant-Based Eating Tips

The Care for God's Creation committee recently hosted a delicious vegan dinner at the parish. Parishioners dined on wonderful appetizers, entrees, and desserts and learned tips for incorporating more plant-based foods into their diets.
