What Is It?  The SJI is a group at Saint Peter’s Church that coordinates a range of activities consistent with Catholic Social Teaching. The Initiative also keeps those in the group informed about other social justice events in DC that might be of interest to group members.  We meet, usually via Zoom, on the first Tuesday of each month.

Not Sure Where You Might Fit In?

Service Saturdays are a great way to start!  Our next Service Saturday is April 18, 2026 from 10 am to 12 pm in the parish hall.  All ages are welcome!

Each Service Saturday has a variety of activities, here are some examples:

• Making cards for seniors
• Drafting advocacy letters for prisoners
• Picking up trash in the neighborhood
• Gardening

Activities under the SJI umbrella fall into five broad categories:

Caring for God’s Creation

Pope Leo teaches “Care for creation is truly a vocation for every human being.”  In 2026, its activities include Plant-based Potlucks, Services Saturdays, advocacy, and educational programming.

Feeding the Hungry

Saint Peter’s responds to the gospel message to feed the hungry by working with two local groups: SOME (So Others Might Eat) and Christ House.  SOME is an interfaith group that began as a soup kitchen and has expanded to address the root causes of poverty and homelessness.  Christ House is a medical facility providing health care for formerly homeless individuals. 

For each group, Saint Peter’s provides and serves a monthly meal – the first Sunday before the second Wednesday of the month for SOME and the fourth Saturday of the month for Christ House.   SJI also packs snack bags for clients of SOME and welcomes individuals, children, and families to assist with prepping snack bags during Sunday coffee hours. 

Celebrating the One Human Family

We are one human family – in solidarity with all. The “One Bread, One Body” ministry provides opportunities to come together with all our brothers and sisters.  Join us for two upcoming events – a Lenten reflection about overcoming racism and a dinner and fellowship with Howard University students.

Welcoming the Stranger

Partnering with Good Neighbors Capitol Hill, an organization of several Hill faith-based communities, the SJI provides assistance for immigrant, refugee and asylum seeking families in setting up their homes in DC.

Providing Prayer and Learning Opportunities for Parishioners – from pre-school through retirement – to learn and practice the Church’s teachings on Social Justice. 

In the past we have offered small group discussions of the writings of Popes Leo XIV and Francis, Just Faith Ministry small group series, and small group learning about Catholic Social Teaching.  SJI also heads up the Lenten tree which provides opportunities for prayer and service over the Lenten season.
